Ender’s Game

Chapter 6 – The Giant’s Drink

Key events:

Ender gets introduced to the flash suits and learns about the toy gun.

Ender learns how to coordinate his body with the flash suit. He tries it out with Alai, Shen and Bernard.

Ender finds out that Alai is the new leader. He was the “bridge”.

Ender finally gets to the next level of the Fantasy Game. However, he used violence to kill the Giant and he hadn’t meant to do that. He realizes that he is a murderer and thinks that Peter would be proud of him.

Themes:

Appearance vs. reality –

1) Ender may look weak and small, but he is actually violent and strong. He killed the Giant unintentionally and thought that Peter would be proud of it because Ender was turning into a murderer.

2) Even though Alai appears to be Bernard’s friend and Bernard was not Ender’s friend, Alai is still Ender’s friend and he still cares about Ender. à

Ender thinks, “Alai was Bernard’s friend. What did Ender have to say to him?” (43). This shows that Alai was Bernard’s friend and Ender was not.

Ender thinks, “And Ender and Alai were friends:” (45). This shows that Ender and Alai was friends again and that they still cared about each other.

Important Quotes:

1) Ender thinks, “So everything depends on how you push off” (43).

This quote shows that ender has already learnt the basic skills and knowledge of how to coordinate his body with flash suits.

2) Ender thinks, “The launch was no longer divided into Bernard’s in-group and Ender’s outcasts. Alai was the bridge” (45).

This quote shows that the launchies have changed and everybody was friends now and that Alai was the one who kept everybody together.

3) Ender thinks, “I’m a murderer, even when I play. Peter would be proud of me” (47). This quote shows the other side of Ender. Though Ender appeals to be a small, weak boy, he is actually quite violent and strong.
