Chapter 13 –Valentine

©     Colonel Graffs colleagues find out about Locke and Demosthenes’ true identity, “If we ever find them getting out of line, we can easily expose them” (161).

©      Demosthenes (Valentine) is becoming more successful then Locke (Peter), even their own father reads Demosthenes columns.

©     Colonel Graff shows up after school and asks Valentine to go with him to visit Ender.

©     We can tell that Ender is tired of games when Colonel Graffs tells valentine “He’s been here for two months. We meant his leave to last only a few days. But you see, he doesn’t seem interested in going on with his education” (164).

©     Valentine starts to understand why Ender is tired of fighting when he tells her “In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him. I think that it’s impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves. And then, in that very moment when I love them, I destroy them.” (168).

©     Valentine also encourages ender to go back to space “Beat the buggers. Then come home and see who notices Peter Wiggin anymore. Look him in the eye when all the world loves and reveres you. That’ll be defeat in his eyes Ender. That’s how you win.” But Ender explains “You don’t understand, I want Peter to love me.” (170).

©     Valentine leaves, hating Colonel Graff for forcing her to convince Ender to go back to space, where he doesn’t want to go.

©     Colonel Graff explains to ender that he was brought back to earth to remember that he was not going to school for himself, but for earth and for Valentine.

©     On the voyage to I.F spaceport, Colonel Graff tells Ender a lot about the buggers, and he also tells Ender that he is expected to be the commander in five years.

©     Ender questions Colonel Graff about why they have to fight the buggers. Colonel Graff doesn’t know the answer “Iv’e heard all kind of reasons” (177). “Ender, believe me, there’s a century of discussion on this subject” (178).

©     Ender wonders wether it could all just be a misunderstanding. However Colonel Graff explains that when the human species is at stake, they don’t have any choice but to attack.
